Kent USA's WSi-430 EDM Eliminates Thermal Drift and Maintains Constant Tension for Perfect Cuts
When cutting profiles in hardened tool steel and complex alloys, even minor temperature shifts can cause thermal drift and ruin a critical part. The Kent Industrial USA WSi-430 addresses these specific challenges by utilizing a fully submerged wire-cut Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) process.
By keeping the workpiece entirely underwater in a dielectric bath during operation, the system stabilizes the temperature of both the wire and the material, ensuring consistent accuracy during long, highly detailed cutting cycles.
Structural stability underpins this cutting precision. The machine structure undergoes Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) analysis to ensure high structural rigidity. Engineers placed the U, V, and Z axes directly on the upper column, a design choice that significantly improves spindle rigidity and minimizes geometric errors.
For axis movement, accurate linear guideways use a patented linear-and-block design, which maintains highly consistent positioning over years of heavy use.
In terms of workspace capacity, the unit handles large components up to 27.6 by 21.3 by 11.6 inches, supporting workpiece weights up to 1,102 pounds. It provides 15.7 inches of X-axis travel and 11.8 inches of Y-axis travel, alongside a taper cutting angle reaching up to ±22.5 degrees across a nearly four-inch thickness.
Automated systems further streamline operations. A five-axis AC servo drive manages complex simulations, while an automatic wire threading system quickly recovers from wire breaks without manual intervention. Wire tension remains constant thanks to a permanent generator control system and a magnetic power clutch wire-receiving design.
Finally, the physical machine footprint is highly practical; the entire unit fits through a standard 80-inch doorway, making installation straightforward without requiring specialized, oversized rigging access.
