Renishaw's NxG Build Processor Simplifies the Path from AM Design to Print

In metal additive manufacturing (AM), the "bottleneck" isn't always the physical printing process -- it's often the digital friction that occurs between a finished design and the first layer of powder. Recognizing this, Renishaw has introduced the Next-Generation Build Processor (NxG BP), a collaboration with Materialise designed to bridge the gap between high-level design and machine execution.

The NxG BP marks a shift away from fragmented workflows toward a more cohesive ecosystem. For years, "power users" in the AM space have navigated a cumbersome path, jumping between Materialise Magics for file preparation and Renishaw's QuantAM for machine-specific optimization. This new processor effectively merges these worlds. By allowing users to export job files directly from Magics to Renishaw's RenAM 500 series machines using the QuantAM format, the software eliminates manual file handling -- a notorious source of human error and lost time.

What makes the NxG BP more than just a file converter is its focus on productivity features that target the specific challenges of multi-laser systems. Chief among these is the "Swim Lane" feature. In multi-laser powder bed fusion, managing how different lasers interact is critical for part integrity. The Swim Lane tool intelligently distributes laser scanning across defined regions of the build platform. This prevents laser interference and manages overlap for full fusion, ensuring that the speed of a multi-laser system doesn't come at the cost of part quality or consistency.

Furthermore, the processor addresses the industry's shift toward increasingly complex geometries. Through integrated support for nTop implicit modeling workflows, users can handle lattice structures and high-fidelity designs that would typically crash traditional CAD software. This is complemented by an "Inspector" tool that allows for real-time verification of laser paths within the workflow. By catching potential setup issues before the build starts, Renishaw is providing a digital safety net that reduces the likelihood of expensive failed builds.

Ultimately, the NxG BP reflects an "open" philosophy in precision engineering. Rather than forcing users into a closed, proprietary loop, Renishaw and Materialise have created a bridge that respects how advanced users actually work.
