Lean manufacturing researcher assesses 'Big 3' carmakers' woes

Lean cell basis in aerospace
"With a good Lean-cell approach, you can consistently produce Six Sigma quality with less-experienced labor operating less-expensive equipment," noted Brad Hart, of Roberts Tool Co., an aerospace manufacturer of Chatsworth, CA. "You’ll stop wasting material, time and energy — and, of course, you’ll make a lot more money.”

Okuma's LB-EX Series Lathes Offer Flexibility
The thermally stable design enables the EX series to achieve machining dimensional change over time of less than Ø5µm. A ball-screw driven tailstock, and rapid X and Z traverse rates allow for increased accuracy and flexibility. Two bed sizes, two spindle sizes and options including milling capability, a sub-spindle (W), and Y-axis increase functionality. Visit Okuma online.

MACHINING
Electric shakers get things settled down better than air
Toledo Tool and Die of Toledo, OH, wanted to improve the way it removed scrap from its stamping press. The company had been using air-powered shakers for several years, with limited success. Air shakers are known to require frequent maintenance, to be noisy, and to perform inconsistently. The solution came from Magnetic Products Inc. of Highland, MI.

QUALITY
Lathe linear scale retrofit delivers ± 0.001" accuracy
Automotive component manufacturer TRW had been using four 30-hp CNC turning center lathes (with 12-station turrets for tooling) regularly for about five years before a challenge arose to make Ford Navigator and Expedition SUVs rear toe-links. The company needed to maintain accuracies of ± 0.001" for this job — which was really pushing the limits of what the standard lathes were capable of holding. After fitting Heidenhain linear scales to the lathes, the machine tools were ready to meet the requirements.
