Expanding Solenoid Manufacturer Finds the Key to Producing Quick and Accurate Aerospace Parts

G.W. Lisk's CNC department manager Tim Gunkler became a fan of Eurotech's multi-axis machines overnight -- literally. "One night a part was left in the Eurotech lathe overnight, semi-finished. When the morning shift came in and finished the part, there was only a deviation of 0.0001" from the previous parts made the day before. Now what other machine can do that?"

G.W. Lisk, the leader in the design and manufacturing of custom solenoids, solenoid valves, LVDT's, and flame arrestors, recently completed an expansion at their Clifton Springs, NY location.

G.W. Lisk manufactures solenoids, solenoid valves, LVDT's, and flame arrestors for the heavy duty/ diesel, medical, automotive, aerospace, aviation, military and commercial fields.

"We were at capacity in our 2 South St. site. In addition to that, we were in the process of manufacturing a new valve, which we needed additional space for," said Bob Woodhouse, chairman of the board and former CFO of Lisk.

With 70 acres across the street, they built a brand new 52,800 square foot manufacturing facility in addition to their current 328,000 square feet of manufacturing, offices and warehouse space. This new space was designated for CNC machining equipment that offered advanced multi-axis technology with speed and extreme accuracy. "This in turn would require more operators and bring back work that we are now sending to outside machine shops," said Mr. Woodhouse.

The original G.W. Lisk metal shop opened in 1910 (above) and has now grown into a 328,000 square feet manufacturing facility (below) with 600 employees.

In 1910, George Washington Lisk opened a small sheet metal shop on the portion of land which their present USA plant now covers. His original products were patented baking pans and hand pump fly sprayers.

With 25 employees he started making solenoids in 1948. As World War II came to a close the focus shifted to solenoids, after producing the first solenoid valve in 1948 to meet a customer need. Since that day the core business model has remained unchanged, and that is to provide exceptional electromagnetic products to fulfill their customer's specific requirements and needs.

Through the years, G.W. Lisk's products grew to include solenoid valves, LVDT's, and flame arrestors. As their customer base grew, they gradually expanded each of their facilities and the manufacturing capabilities at each site. The Clifton Springs plant now has over 600 employees; this being the backbone of the company, it includes 120 engineers who can help customize, develop or fix any solenoid design you throw at them.

G.W. Lisk's core business is to provide exceptional electromagnetic products to fulfill their customer's specific needs.

In November of 2013 (just before the expansion started) Lisk's manufacturing department had been looking to replace some 8" older turning lathes. The top criteria was a Y-axis lathe with speed and accuracy. The ease of use and safety of the equipment were also paramount to Lisk.

With the growth of the aerospace industry, Lisk needed to bring qualified designs to market quickly. "We had been looking at Eurotech multi-axis machines for several years and decided to invest in the B545SLY and a B735LY models," said Tim Gunkler, CNC Department Manager.

When the new expansion was completed, it was then time to invest in new equipment. The decision was made to buy two more Eurotech multi-axis B545SLY machines. "We bought two more of the Eurotech single turrets models because our guys on the floor like running the Eurotech machines best," said Ben McCann, Assistant Manager.

G.W. Lisk recently purchased two additional Eurotech multi-axis machines, including this B545SLY model.

Tim Gunkler shared an example that demonstrates the tight tolerances of the machine.

"One night a part was left in the Eurotech lathe overnight, semi-finished. When the morning shift came in and finished the part, there was only a deviation of 0.0001" from the previous parts made the day before. This was done without any warm-up. Now what other machine can do that!"

Over a century of manufacturing experience for industries such as heavy duty/ diesel, medical, automotive, aerospace, aviation, military and commercial fields, G.W. Lisk has found Eurotech lathes to be the state of the art CNC solutions for their solenoid and valve manufacturing.
