New Multi-Cell Assembly System for Tier 1 Automotive Supplier Simplifies Manufacturing Process of Steering Gear Sub-Assemblies

Evana Automation Specialists, a subsidiary of Phillips Service Industries (PSI) and leading Systems Integrator and builder of custom, automated assembly and test systems, recently received a contract from a Tier 1 automotive supplier to provide a multi-cell assembly system to simplify the process of manufacturing steering gear sub-assemblies.

The system will consist of five lean assembly cells that automatically feed components to stations where the sector shafts are assembled to the side cover, piston end caps are torqued into place, valve housings are assembled to the worm rack, and the gear balls are installed. The system has complete component traceability, including data collection of torque values, ball selections and running torque. All items are tagged to the serial number of the part and saved in a database for future accessibility. The system is scheduled for delivery in February 2014.
