New Machine Automation Solution for High-Volume Jobs Including Deburring Process

Methods Machine Tools, Inc. recently designed and produced a pre-engineered multiple machine automation solution for manufacturing and deburring a high volume of like parts.

The integrated automation cell features two High Performance FEELER VMP-580 Vertical Milling Machining Centers being serviced by a single FANUC M20iA robot set-up to process one side of a part in the first machine, and the second side in the other machine. The part is flipped in between operations while both machines are running. After finishing the machining, the robot processes the parts through a series of ATI brand compliant pneumatic deburring heads before placing them on the out-feed conveyor.

This flexible configuration allows for two different machining operations, or could be set-up for both machines to run the same operation. The cell can also be expanded with another machine to allow three machines to be serviced by the robot.

"High volume part production is very well suited for automation and integrating the deburring process in the cell provides an additional increase in productivity," said Mr. John Lucier, Automation Manager, Methods Machine Tools, Inc.

The Methods-FEELER vertical machining center line includes the HV-Series, VB-Series and VMP-Series. The FEELER VMP-Series includes the VMP-580, VMP-800 and VMP-1100 models with 10,000 rpm spindles ranging from 15 HP -- 25 HP. The VMP-580 machine is also available in an APC pallet changer version. Machines feature linear guideways on X and Y-Axes and boxways on the Z-Axis. X-Axis travels range from 580mm -- 1,100mm (23" - 43"), Y-Axis travels range from 420mm -- 610mm (16.5" - 24") and Z-Axis travels are from 510mm -- 600mm (20" -- 23.6"). The VMP-580 features a 24-tool automatic tool changer and the VMP-800 and VMP-1100 machines use a 30-tool automatic tool changer. A FANUC 0i-MD control is standard on the VMP-Series machines.

Methods will be holding an Open House at their state-of-the-art Technology Center in Tempe, Arizona on November 7th and 8th, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. -- 5:00 p.m. each day. Manufacturing professionals are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Located at 615 West 24th Street in Tempe, Methods will have the FEELER Machine Tools on display as well as the following machines: Matsuura 5-Axis Multitasking Machining Centers; Nakamura Multitasking Turning Centers; FANUC Robocut Wire EDM; Fanuc RoboDrill Med Cell 30-Taper VMC with automatic loading/unloading via robot; Citizen Swiss Turning Centers; VisionGauge part inspection systems and a Flow Waterjet.
